Quando ci separammo
In lacrime e in silenzio,
Coi nostri cuori infranti,
Per anni abbandonandoci,
La tua guancia divenne fredda e pallida;
Piú gelido il tuo bacio;
In verità quell’ora ci predisse
Di questa il gran dolore!

La rugiada del mattino
Fredda mi si posò sul ciglio;
Mi apparve come il segno
Di ciò che provo ora.
Ogni tuo giuramento s’è spezzato,
La tua reputazione è fragile:
Pronunciano il tuo nome
Enumerandone tutte le vergogne.

Avanti a me pronunciano il tuo nome,
Come un rintocco funebre ai miei orecchi;
E mi percorre un fremito —
Perché tu mi fosti sí cara?
Essi non sanno che un tempo ti conobbi,
Che ti conobbi bene:
A lungo, a lungo ti dovrò rimproverare,

Ed è troppo difficile parlarti.
Segretamente noi ci incontravamo:
Ora in silenzio mi affliggo
Che il tuo cuore abbia già dimenticato,
Che il tuo spirito m’abbia ormai ingannato.
Se io ti dovessi incontrare
Dopo un lungo periodo di anni,
Come potrei donarti il mio saluto? —
Con silenzio e lacrime.
